Hello my name is Mark Kirkendall and I teach Middle School History and English. I am 46 years old. I have been married to my beautiful wife for 16 years and we have one daughter. In my spare time I like to watch sports, collect comic books, play Dungeons & Dragons, and spend time with my friends and family.

My Philosophy of Education

     Education affects both individuals and society in many ways. My philosophy of education is the belief that learning should develop the whole person- intellectually, emotionally, socially, and morally- while preparing students to think critically, act responsibly, and contribute meaningfully to the world around them. Education is not merely learning from a book or listening to a lecture, but should also promote curiosity, independence, and lifelong growth.

     My philosophy promotes the idea that every student is different. Each student has unique strengths, experiences, and ways of learning. I believe that education must be student-centered.  Teachers should act as guides to students in discovering knowledge not just deliver the information to the student. This leads to students being actively engaged and asking questions. This also leads to students to explore their own ideas and come to their own understanding. Students that feel valued and heard are more likely to want to learn and develop self confidence.

     I also believe that critical thinking is a key component to education. Students must learn how to analyze, evaluate, and apply knowledge rather than memorize facts. Education should challenge students to think deeply, question everything, and consider multiple outcomes and perspectives. This creates students that are better problem-solvers and informed citizens who are able to navigate complex issues.

     The next point to my philosophy is the role of education in character development. We should not focus on test scores but also teach the student the key components of how to be a good person. This includes teaching basic values such as respect, responsibility, integrity, and empathy. This will help students build strong relationships and make ethical decisions. A positive classroom environment that promotes inclusivity and mutual respect is essential to foster academic and personal growth.

     I believe that education should be relatable to real life experiences. When students can see the results of what they learn and are applied to real world situations, they become more engaged and motivated. Using practical applications, discussions, and team building activities can help bridge the gap between theory and practice. This prepares students for their future careers  and helps them develop skills such as communication, teamwork, and how to adapt to situations.

     I also view education as a lifelong process. Learning does not end when students leave the classroom; it continues throughout life. Teachers should instill a love of learning that makes students want to learn beyond the classroom. It should encourage curiosity, creativity, and self-reflection. This helps students to become independent learners who will be able to adapt to change and pursue personal and professional growth.

     The role of the educator is key to shaping the educational experience. A teacher should be supportive, adaptable, and committed to meeting the diverse needs of students. This includes recognizing different learning styles, providing meaningful feedback, and creating an environment where all students feel safe to express themselves. The teachers that are the most effective are the ones that can inspire their students not just by their knowledge but through their passion, dedication and belief in their students potential.

     In conclusion, my philosophy of education stresses the importance of student centered learning, critical thinking, character development, real-world relevance, and lifelong growth. Education should empower students to become thoughtful, capable, and compassionate individuals. Fostering a supportive and engaging learning environment, educators can help students reach their full potential and prepare them to make meaningful contributions to society.
